About Miltos Skouras

Miltos Skouras was born in Athens in 1955. He graduated from the School of Architecture in Milan in 1979 and then studied semiotics and communication at the Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3.
Between 1974 and 1990 he lived in Milan, Paris and New York.

He officially started painting in 1983, publishing his first work in the French magazine METAL HURLANT. Initially his works, which involve the mixed media of image and text and with which he participated in the pioneering European Graphic Novel, are published in magazines such as American Heavy Metal, French Metal Hurlant and Italian Alter.
At the same time, he began to be concerned with the ability of his painting to communicate a targeted message. He thus creates works for fashion, advertising, book covers, magazine covers and articles and film posters, which are shown in notable publications, such as Italian Vogue, Vanity, Harper’s Bazaar, and support advertising campaigns that were awarded international prizes in Cannes and Milan.

In 1991 he returned to Athens where he lives and works. In 1992 (-2010) he founded C&A Communication and Art, a creative advertising and brand design company, while continuing his painting activity.

Gradually, Skouras abandoned the pursuit of the image in relation to its use and concentrated on its purely artistic substance. From the airbrush and acrylic paints, he transitioned to more traditional means of realizing his works, such as oil paints, canvas, and brush. He developed a kind of plastic realism where the element of narrative remains a structural component of his compositions.

Since 2010 he has mainly been developing a rich thematic range of works, some in black and white, some in colour, with a central focus on human existence. His painting compositions deal with themes such as family relationships, love relationships, work, the social environment, commercialization, paradox, the relationship between the real and the imaginary, and the relationship between space and time.

The unity of LANDSCAPES occupies a special place in his work. These works attempt an experiential approach to the Greek landscape as it is exposed to the artist’s gaze. He calls them Land Portraits, indicating the complexity of the emotions and information they contain.

“Although persistently figurative-realistic, the painting of Miltos Skouras explores and expands the possibilities of representation, invokes a deeper communication, recommends an alternative and perhaps cinematic perception of life and the world”, notes art historian Yannis Bolis.

He presents his work in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries. His works are in museum collections and private collections.
